George Stickney House

George and Sylvia Stickney were accomplished mediums and devout Spiritualists. Their drive to commune with spirits may have been due to losing 7 of their 10 children before they reached adulthood. Due to their belief in Spiritualism, the Stickney’s often held seances.

They designed their house, built in 1865, in line with their knowledge of the spirit world. All the corners in their house were rounded, to facilitate the movement of spirits as well as deter evil beings from getting stuck in the corners. The second floor of the home held a large ballroom, where George and Sylvia entertained guests and hosted their seances.

Legend has it that the Stickney’s house had one major design flaw - an area containing a 90-degree angle. People believe George died in that corner of the house, with a look of terror cemented on his face. It is said that his ghost is still trapped in that room. While it has been documented that no 90-degree angles were found in the house at the time of his death, the cause of his death is still unknown.

It is now the home of the Village of Bull Valley and its police department, and many employees have observed evidence of the supernatural over the years. Footsteps and human voices have been heard in hallways. Objects have been seen moving around, lights turn on and off, and doors open. On top of all that, one police officer reportedlyencountered the ghostly father-in-law of George Stickney. The Stickney House is definitely not a place you’d want to stay in alone.
